A man was killed in an ATV accident

A man died in a rollover SUV crash in Comanche County on Tuesday afternoon, according to a media release from the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Eric Shane Covey, 43, of Dublin, was pronounced dead at the scene of the single-vehicle crash.

A preliminary DPS investigation revealed that a 2015 Polaris Ranger HO900 XP driven by Covey with a passenger was traveling west on County Road 436 approximately three miles west of Proctor.

He drove south into a ditch and attempted to steer back onto the road around 1:46 p.m. Tuesday, causing the ATV to roll onto the driver's side, the DPS media release said.

According to DPS, the driver had been drinking alcoholic beverages. Covey was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident at 2:45 p.m. by Justice of the Peace Johnny Conine.

The passenger, Deanna Darlene Montgomery, 28, of Dublin, refused treatment at the scene for a non-incapacitating injury. Neither the driver nor the passenger was wearing a helmet or seat belt.

Texas Highway Patrol Trooper Robert R. McGrath of DeLeon investigated the accident. He was assisted by Comanche THP Trooper Mitchell Best and Comanche County Sheriff's Deputy Cole Partin.
