The death of a FC Bayern Munich fan overshadows the victory in the Champions League

FC Bayern Munich is mourning the loss of a fan who was there for the team's 1-0 win over Benfica in the Champions League on Wednesday.

The Bavarian club announced early on Thursday morning that they had received news that the fan had died while being transported to the hospital.

Out of respect for the person, the Bayern fans neither sang nor chanted during the game. The atmosphere in the Bayern Stadium was significantly darker a few minutes after kick-off as it became clear that there was a medical emergency that required the help of paramedics and police officers.

Bayern fan group Club No. 12 said its members “will not be supporting as usual today due to an emergency medical procedure. Life comes before sport. We wish the family and friends a lot of strength.”

After the person was carried out of the block on a stretcher about half an hour later, the Bayern fans did not continue their chants.

“A medical emergency in the stands of the Allianz Arena overshadowed the game from the start,” Bayern said in a statement. “Out of consideration, the Südkurve refrained from the usual loud support of its team, and the club also reduced its coverage of the game.”

“Around an hour after the final whistle, the German record champions received the sad news that the fan had died on the way to hospital. FC Bayern mourns side by side with the fan’s relatives.”

Jamal Musiala's 67th-minute header – assisted by Harry Kane – was enough for Bayern to end their two-game losing streak and claim their second win of the league phase.

The Bayern fans cheered and celebrated the goal, but the mood remained subdued for the rest of the game.

“We didn’t know anything about it during the game, shortly after,” Bayern midfielder Konrad Laimer said of the medical emergency. “We wish the family a lot of strength and all the best, we are thinking of everyone involved.”
