Jesse Vang has to stand trial for the death of a three-year-old boy

Jesse Vang's next court date is arraignment on November 18th.

MANITOWOC – Jesse Vang, a 40-year-old Two Rivers man, has been brought to trial on charges of causing the death of a child by abusing and hiding the body.

Vang appeared at the Manitowoc County Courthouse on Nov. 6 for a preliminary hearing. He is accused of causing the death of 3-year-old Elijah Vue, whose remains were found in September after he was reported missing from an apartment in Two Rivers on Feb. 20.

District Attorney Jacalyn LaBre called two witnesses during the hearing, Eric Voland and Justin Ragen. Both are special agents with the Wisconsin Department of Justice Criminal Investigation Division and both have been involved in Elijah's disappearance since February.

Vang was arrested in February after reporting Elijah missing. He was charged with child neglect, but that was dismissed and included in his current case. In addition to the two felonies, he is also charged with obstructing an officer.

After hearing testimony from the two witnesses about the investigative process, Judge Anthony Lambrecht concluded that there was sufficient cause to move forward with charges of physical abuse of a child resulting in death and hiding a corpse against Vang. However, the preliminary hearing is only one step in the legal process and Vang is still presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Katrina B. Baur, Elijah's mother, was also arrested in February and charged with child neglect and obstructing an officer. Like Vang, her charges were dismissed when she was recently charged with chronic neglect of a child – resulting in death, neglect of a child and two counts of obstructing an officer.

Baur's next court date is December 20 for “further proceedings.”

Elijah was reported missing by Vang on February 20th. After nearly seven months of police and municipal searches, the boy's skeletal remains were found on September 7 on private property just over 5 kilometers from Vang's Two Rivers apartment, near a house where Baur used to live with Elia .

The Fond du Lac County Medical Examiner's Office determined Elijah's cause of death to be “homicide by unspecified means.”

Vang is represented by attorneys Jeffrey Jensen and Joel Mogren. His next court date is an arraignment on Nov. 18 at 11:30 a.m.
