A former Westland officer charged with threatening a guard has been sentenced

Sentencing is scheduled for a former Westland police officer who was recently found guilty of threatening and racially harassing a casino security guard last year.

Kevin Yudt, 43, of Grass Lake, was found guilty Friday in Wayne County Circuit Court of two counts of ethnic intimidation and assault and battery, according to a news release from Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel.

Sentencing is scheduled for December 6 at 10:30 a.m. He could spend more than four years behind bars.

Yudt threatened a security guard at the MGM Grand Detroit on April 6, 2023, after he and a friend were denied entry to the casino area because they appeared drunk, The Detroit News reported in June after Yudt was brought to trial.

Authorities said Yudt identified himself as a Westland police sergeant and told the security guard, “I will wait for you when you come to Westland and you will not survive.”

They also said he poked the security guard in the chest and shouted racial slurs at him.

Yudt was terminated from his employment with the Westland Police Department in May 2023, Nessel said. Charges were brought against him in May.

“No one is above the law, and I commend the jury for their service and commitment to justice,” Nessel said. “This type of behavior has no place in our society, especially for those sworn to protect and serve. My office remains dedicated to pursuing threats of violence and ethnic intimidation to hold perpetrators accountable for their actions.”
