Armwood High School student arrested after being found with unloaded gun on campus: HCSO

An Armwood High School student was arrested Wednesday after he was found on campus with a gun in a backpack, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

Officials said an HCSO school resource officer at Armwood High School in Seffner received a tip that a student may have a weapon at school. Hillsborough County Public Schools said at this time the campus was placed on a “controlled lockdown.”

When the student was found, school resource officers searched the teen's backpack and found an unloaded gun, school officials said.

The teen, whose name is being withheld due to his age, was taken into custody and arrested for possession of a firearm on school grounds, HCSO said.

“It is heartbreaking and completely unacceptable that any student would ever bring a weapon onto school grounds. Actions like these create unnecessary fear and undermine the trust and safety we strive to build in our schools every day,” said Hillsborough Sheriff Chad Chronister. “We remain committed to our commitment to ensuring the safety of our students and staff and will continue to address such incidents with the seriousness they deserve.”

Hillsborough County School District officials said a second student was also taken into custody after he was found with live ammunition from his weapon. HCSO has not said whether charges will be filed against this student.

The district said in a statement that both students would not return to school as part of its “zero tolerance policy.”
