Sulawesi Court Releases Teacher Accused of Abuse – Archipelago

The Andoolo District Court in South Konawe, South Sulawesi decided on Wednesday to suspend the detention of Supriyani, a 36-year-old contract teacher who was accused of attacking one of her first graders at SDN 4 Baito Government Elementary School, the child of a local police officer.

Andri Darmawan, Supriyani's legal counsel, said the incident report contained several inconsistencies, including the time and place where the alleged attack took place.

“The [report] said the incident occurred at 10 a.m [on April 24]but at that point there were no more first graders at the school,” he said on Tuesday, as quoted by Kompas.com.

“I never hit the child. The police investigators told me to just admit it [that I did]Supriyani told reporters after her release from the Kendari women's prison in the provincial capital, where she had been detained since October 16.

The student's parents reportedly demanded the teacher pay 50 million rupees ($3,200) to stop the case.

South Konawe Police Chief Sr. Adj. Comm Febry Sam said the alleged incident occurred at the school on April 24 when Supriyani tried to discipline the child.
