DePaul is investigating attacks on Jewish students as a possible hate crime

Two DePaul University students were attacked on campus Wednesday after showing their support for Israel.

Robert Manuel, president of DePaul University, said two Jewish students expressing support for Israel were beaten outside the student center on the Lincoln Park campus.

Manuel shared a letter with the DePaul community on Wednesday expressing his outrage. He said the attack occurred at 3:20 p.m. when masked gunmen attacked the two students.

The students were injured but refused medical treatment. The university is working with Chicago police to determine whether this was a hate crime because the victims were targeted because of their Jewish identity.

“We recognize that for a significant portion of our Jewish community, Israel is a central part of their Jewish identity. These students – and every student – should feel safe on our university campus,” Manuel wrote in the letter.

Manuel said the university will hold those responsible for this “outrageous” incident accountable. He asked for witnesses to call the DePaul Public Safety Department.

Manuel said the university will ensure the campus is a safe and welcoming place for everyone.

There was some tension on campus during anti-Palestinian protests in Gaza earlier this year.

Students reported feeling intimidated when attempting to walk to classes, dining halls and the student center.

Students were asked to call the Public Safety Office if any acts of violence occurred.
