Why is Election Day not a federal holiday in the United States?

The United States is one of only nine Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development countries that will not hold elections this weekend. To combat this problem, Israel and South Korea declare election days as national holidays to increase voter turnout.

A Pew Research Center poll found that a clear majority of U.S. adults support making Election Day a federal holiday. In 2024, 72% supported the proposal, up from 65% in 2018. This growing support cuts across party lines: 78% of Democrats and 68% of Republicans were in favor.

Vice President and Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris expressed support for this idea back in 2019.

“There is no question that Election Day should be a national holiday,” Harris wrote on X at the time.
