High-ranking Sinaloa Cartel member indicted on drug charges

A high-ranking member of Mexico's Sinaloa Cartel has been indicted by a federal grand jury in Chicago on drug conspiracy charges.

According to the federal indictment, Jose Angel Canobbio Inzunza conspired with Ivan Archivaldo Guzman Salazar and his brothers to manufacture and import drugs such as cocaine, fentanyl and methamphetamine into the United States

The Guzman Salazar brothers, known as “Chapitos” and sons of imprisoned cartel leader Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, allegedly relied on Canobbio Inzunza to run a security group, Los Chimales, that facilitated the cartel’s drug trade.

According to the indictment, Canobbio Inzunza was not only in charge of cartel security, but also allegedly served as Ivan Archivaldo Guzman Salazar's main advisor and lieutenant.

Canobbio Inzunza, 44, was charged with drug conspiracy, which carries a maximum sentence of life in federal prison. Canobbio Inzunza is currently believed to be in Mexico, where there is a US arrest warrant against him.

The indictment is part of an operation by the Organized Drug Crime Task Force, which coordinates federal, state and local law enforcement efforts to dismantle drug trafficking organizations.
