Kirk Herbstreit's adorable golden retriever Ben, who brought countless smiles to so many college campuses over the past two years, has passed away, according to ESPN football analyst “College GameDay.”

A certified emotional service dog, Ben became famous for his infectious, friendly nature while staying in the national spotlight each week. He caused uncontrollable oohs and aahs as he accompanied Herbstreit around the country to cover football.

Ben was often seen on set during live productions.

The longtime ESPN commentator would also bring his beloved dog along to his “Thursday Night Football” appearance on Prime Video.

Herbstreit said Ben died after a battle with cancer.

“This is really hard to write, but so many of you loved and cared about Ben that I wanted to let you know. “We found out today that the cancer had spread to Ben's organs and there was nothing we could do – we had to let him go,” Herbstreit posted on social media along with a picture showing him with his arm around Ben.

Ben had been with Herbstreit for 10 years and had become ill this year. According to ESPN, Ben was diagnosed with leukemia in March and underwent surgery in July.

“I've had dogs all my life, but Ben was one man against one. He was smart, loving, gentle, patient, curious and hospitable to everyone. Always a big smile and a gentle wag of the tail. He and I were able to communicate. He and I got along and supported each other. He was at home with me more than anyone else and traveled with me to work. Such an uncomplicated companion. Tough day – but it will live in all of us forever.”

On Tuesday, Herbstreit said Ben received his second chemotherapy injection in late October and his condition was deteriorating.

“One of the hardest things I've been through in my life. Ben is my best friend and companion. I love him with all my heart,” he said earlier this week.

The pooch became a fan favorite in 2023 when Herbstreit took the big lab on the road for the first time.

The college football expert explained in January how much he loved the Ben phenomenon.

“There’s just something different about him. I'm just glad that people love his happiness and it gives them a better day,” he said.

“That wasn't the intention. I just wanted to have a companion who would accompany me on the road as well as when I was traveling. He’s my really good buddy.”

Herbstreit described the joy Ben brought to the world as the couple went to work.

Ben often received his own press pass, giving the pup coveted access to the field.

As news of his death spread, tributes to Ben poured in.
