OKC police officer placed on leave after incident involving 70-year-old man

According to Oklahoma City police, an officer is on routine paid leave following an encounter with 70-year-old Lich Vu, who was hospitalized following an incident on Oct. 27.

The incident began with a car accident on Northwest 39th Street near Meridian Avenue in which a driver struck Vu's vehicle. According to the newly released police report, the drivers confronted each other before officers arrived.

Police say Vu allegedly tried to reach into the other driver's car and made comments about hitting her, even though he didn't touch her. The officer issued both drivers tickets, but Vu reportedly refused to sign the ticket. According to police, during an argument with the officer, Vu hit the officer's chest with the back of his hand. The officer then restrained Vu, who resisted and fell, hitting his head on the ground.

Photos provided by Vu's daughter show him tied up on the ground. The officer called a paramedic and removed the handcuffs. Vu's daughter said he was in intensive care for several days after the incident.

In response, Oklahoma City Police released a statement saying:

“We understand the concern this has caused in our community and would like to reassure you that this incident is being taken very seriously. An investigation was launched immediately following the incident and is currently ongoing.”

News 9 discovered the officer has been with OKCPD for six years and has no publicly available disciplinary record. However, it should be noted that complaints about use of force are not considered open files

Vu's daughter also shared on social media that he was still in the hospital but was now conscious. Body camera footage has been requested, but it is unclear when it will be available.
