Authorities say one person is in custody for a double homicide at the Marine Pier as victims have been identified

NAVY PIER – A 47-year-old man and a 51-year-old man were identified as the victims of a fatal shooting at Navy Pier on Tuesday, with police saying an arrest has been made in the case.

Lamont Johnson, 51, and Peter Jennings, 47, were shot by a disgruntled ex-employee near a pier loading dock on Tuesday, the Cook County coroner's office said. Johnson was a father of four children, while Jennings was a father of two.

The attack sparked a search for the gunman, who was an employee of a pier subcontractor but had been fired on Oct. 14, police previously said. The shooting led to the famous tourist attraction being closed on Tuesday.

Police issued a community alert for the suspect, who they said fled the pier on public transportation. On Thursday evening, Chicago Police officers said they had “taken a person of interest in this incident into custody.”

“The investigation is currently ongoing,” the police said in a statement.

Johnson was a good person who always took care of his mother and four children, his aunt told the Sun-Times. The suburban Lansing resident had worked at Navy Pier for more than a decade and built a good life for himself, the Sun-Times reported.

According to a dinner train set up by a family friend, Jennings is survived by his wife, two stepchildren, his sister-in-law and his brother-in-law. The fundraiser accepts donations for food and meals. So far it has raised $3,400 of its $5,000 goal.

“His wife Katie and his stepchildren Hazel and Ted, as well as his sister-in-law Kelly and brother-in-law Rufino, have been a great asset to our community and we would like to offer them some support in this situation of shock and loss,” the fundraiser said.
