Accused drag racer arrested and car seized after allegedly performing stunts in front of police lieutenant.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – A 19-year-old is behind bars and his ride was confiscated after a Memphis police lieutenant reportedly saw him endangering others on the road Thursday morning.

Jamarius Washington is charged with drag racing, evading arrest and reckless driving.

According to the Memphis Police Department, a lieutenant was driving on Shelby Drive at 7:20 a.m. when he observed a black Dodge Challenger maneuvering through traffic and turning left from the right lane onto Mendenhall Road, cutting off several cars. as he sped away.

The officer followed the sports car north until they both stopped at a red light. According to police, when the light turned green, the driver of the Challenger, Washington, stepped on the accelerator and lost traction.

The lieutenant attempted to pull Washington over while continuing to drive recklessly, but the 19-year-old allegedly drove off and ran several red lights in a high-speed chase until he got out of the lieutenant's sight.

A shipment was sent with a description of the car, which was soon found at the address where it was registered.

Washington was taken into custody and his vehicle was towed to the city's impound lot.

MPD posted a video of the car being towed on Facebook to remind others that the department doesn't play around when it comes to reckless driving.
