WCSD releases new details about the incident that led to school closures

SPARKS, Nev. (KOLO) – The Washoe County School District is releasing new information about the incident that led to a lockdown at two area schools on Wednesday.

On November 6, staff at Robert Mitchell Elementary School contacted school police to report a disturbance or possible fight near the school campus, possibly involving high school-aged students. They reported that one person appeared to be injured and was missing clothing.

A few minutes later, as school police responded to the area, another report was received from Sparks High School staff reporting a student on campus armed with a pocket knife. Due to both reports, Sparks High School and Robert Mitchell Elementary School were placed on lockdown.

School police and staff arrested a suspicious student. According to the school district, those involved in the incident have been identified and the pocket knives have been recovered.

One person was treated for minor injuries, but no other injuries were reported.

Another person was arrested for school disruption and assault with a deadly weapon. The investigation into the incident is ongoing and further criminal charges are pending.

According to school police, it was an isolated incident between private individuals and there was no evidence of gang affiliation.
