Maccabi Tel Aviv fans clash with supposedly pro-Palestinian protesters at the Ajax Europa League game

AMSTERDAM — Maccabi Tel Aviv supporters clashed with seemingly pro-Palestinian protesters outside the Dutch team's home stadium in Amsterdam on Thursday evening before and after a Europa League soccer match between their team and Ajax Amsterdam, media and officials said.

Clashes reportedly broke out despite Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema banning a pro-Palestinian demonstration amid fears it would lead to clashes between protesters and Israeli football club supporters.

Details of the incidents remained unclear, but Israeli media reported that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called his Dutch counterpart about it.

Israel's ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, also condemned the violence in a post on the social media platform X.

There were no immediate reports of arrests or injuries in the clashes outside Amsterdam's Johan Cruyff Arena, the city's main arena and home of Ajax. Ajax won the Europa League game 5-0 after leading 3-0 at half-time.
