Kenosha student arrested after attempting to enter school with gun

Kenosha police arrested a 13-year-old Thursday who allegedly tried to enter Roosevelt Elementary School with a gun.

The Kenosha Unified School District student reportedly attempted to enter the school at 3322 Roosevelt Road around 9 a.m. with suspicious bags.

When school staff met and questioned him in the secure entrance area, the teenager fled, according to district officials.

The teenager was located and arrested shortly after 2 p.m

Kenosha Police Chief Patrick Patton said “quick and careful” actions by school staff prevented the teenager from entering the school beyond the main entrance.

Patton said it is still unclear how the teenager obtained a gun.

“We know from the initial investigation that this is something that should have been known,” Patton said. “This is something people have been told. We know there were internet searches. And all the red flags were there. We narrowly missed a tragedy today.”

Patton said the investigation revealed the teen had been sharing videos and making comments to other students for weeks leading up to the incident. At a press conference, Patton showed one of those videos, in which the teenager carries an AR-15-style rifle, in which he “appears to be practicing room entry techniques.”

Investigators also discovered that the teen had been researching school shootings online.

No other details about the teen have been released, including where the student goes to school.

“Today we experienced something that all school staff and families fear: a possible school shooting,” said Dr. Jeffrey Weiss, superintendent of the Kenosha Unified School District, at a news conference. “Today we are grateful.”

On May 1, police killed a 14-year-old student outside Mount Horeb Middle School. The student pointed a gun at the police. The weapon turned out to be an air rifle.
