Israeli soccer fans “ambushed and attacked” in Amsterdam; Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Office Calls It 'Serious Violence' | World News

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said he was aware of the violence in Amsterdam and ordered the immediate dispatch of rescue planes to help citizens.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been briefed on the details of a “very violent incident” against Israeli citizens in Amsterdam, his office said on Friday. He ordered that two rescue planes be dispatched immediately to help citizens there, a statement said.

Several videos have emerged online showing mobs targeting Israeli citizens in Amsterdam on Thursday.(X)

Reports of involvement of pro-Palestinian groups

The Times of Israel Maccabi Tel Aviv fans were reportedly attacked on the streets of Amsterdam following the Israeli football team's loss to local club Ajax. Videos from the Dutch city show brutal attacks by masked attackers, some carrying Palestinian flags and chanting “Liberate Palestine.”

Some reports claimed that a number of Israelis were injured, but no immediate figures were available. According to Hebrew media, the passports of some of the attacked Israelis were stolen by the attackers.

Earlier on Thursday, the Netherlands-based NL Times reported that several people had been arrested for rioting. However, Amsterdam police did not confirm whether those arrested were fans of the football club or pro-Palestinian activists, the Jerusalem Post noted.

Local law enforcement also protected the hundreds of Maccabi fans who attended the game.

Various reports from both Israel and Amsterdam said that the Israeli embassy in the Netherlands was involved in bringing Israelis to safety.

Videos circulating on social media show fans being beaten, chased with knives and narrowly avoiding collisions with vehicles. Several clips also show Israelis jumping into canals to escape the demonstrators.
