Winning Mega Millions tickets are sold in Texas, Florida as the jackpot grows

play

Lottery players in Texas and Florida won big Mega Millions prizes after Tuesday's drawing, although the total jackpot rose to $229 million.

A $1 million Mega Millions ticket was sold at a supermarket in Austin, Texas, on Tuesday, according to the Texas Lottery. To win the $1 million prize, the ticket matched all five Mega Millions numbers except the final Mega Ball number.

A Florida player was an even bigger winner after purchasing a ticket that matched the five numbers and included the Megaplier, increasing the prize to $3 million, according to the Florida Lottery.

No details were announced about the winners. Texas is one of 17 states that allow national lottery winners to remain anonymous if they claim winnings worth at least $1 million.

The winning ticket is the latest Mega Millions prize from Texas after a lucky player won a massive $810 million jackpot in September with a ticket sold at Sugar Land.

When is the next Mega Millions drawing?

The Mega Millions jackpot rose to an estimated $229 million after no one won the top prize in Tuesday's drawing.

The next drawing will take place on Friday at 11:00 p.m. EST.

If someone is lucky enough to hit the jackpot, they could take home an estimated lump sum payout of $107.4 million after taxes, according to the lottery.

In March, a lucky Mega Millions player from New Jersey won a whopping $1.1 billion. Although this prize has not yet been claimed, the lottery says it is not the first time a jackpot has gone unclaimed.

How to play Mega Millions

To purchase a ticket, you'll need to visit your local supermarket, gas station, or convenience store – and in a few states you can purchase tickets online. Some airport terminals may also sell lottery tickets.

To play you must select six numbers. Five numbers are white balls ranging from 1 to 70. The gold mega ball is a number between 1 and 25.

If you think the odds are stacked against you, ask for a “Quick Pick” or an “Easy Pick.” The computer then randomly generates the numbers for you.

Players can add the “Megaplier” for $1, which can increase non-top prize winnings by two, three, four or five times. The Megaplier is drawn on Tuesday and Friday before the Mega Millions numbers.

There are 15 Megaplier balls in total:

  • 2Xfive balls
  • 3Xsix balls
  • 4Xthree balls
  • 5Xa ball
