Live updates on the 2024 election: Trump prepares for transition back to the White House after his victory

Donald Trump praises “Ice Maiden” Susie Wiles after historic election victory

President-elect Donald Trump has begun preparations for the Oval Office by naming Susie Wiles as his new White House chief of staff.

Wiles ran his successful 2024 campaign and is the first of many candidates who will help advance his agenda, which includes mass deportations of illegal immigrants, higher trade tariffs and expanded tax cuts.

The Republican, meanwhile, appears to be on track to win Nevada as he nears the completion of a stunningly clean victory in swing states, with only Arizona remaining.

Trump shared several late-night election victory posts on Truth Social on Thursday, his first since his return to power was confirmed early Wednesday morning.

The posts included a map of the Electoral College, newspaper front pages reporting his triumph over Democrat Kamala Harris and a photo of a Trump wearing a MAGA hat with the caption: “Get Ready for the Gilded Age.”

On Thursday, President Joe Biden addressed the nation in the Rose Garden of the White House and assured Americans that there would be a “peaceful and orderly transition” from his administration to Trump's. He also praised Harris' “heart and effort” in the campaign.

Oddsmakers call JD Vance and Gavin Newsom the frontrunners in 2028

Bookmakers are already looking ahead to the next presidential election and see Trump's vice president as his natural heir on the Republican ticket.

Perhaps less obvious is that the consensus suggests that California Gov. Gavin Newsom will be the man to lead the fightback next time.

The CBS anchor chokes up discussing how he will explain Trump's victory to his children

The CBS News anchor choked up when asked how he would explain Donald Trump's election victory to his children. John Dickerson was visibly emotional as he reacted to the president-elect's historic victory while appearing on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Thursday (November 7). Colbert asked, “How would you explain this to a 14-year-old today?” How would you explain this election?” “I'll try not to think about my boys,” Dickerson said before choking up. After a short pause, he regained his composure to voice his concerns.

Joe Rogan calls on Trump to “unite everyone” as president.

The podcaster, who interviewed both Trump and JD Vance but not Kamala Harris (her campaign was in talks with him, but the two sides couldn't agree on a time), has already been blamed by the likes of Elon Musk and Dana White that he helped the Republican to victory with his short-term approval.

He has since called on the president-elect not to attack his enemies, commenting on his popular show: “He has to unite people. He can't attack the left, he can't attack everyone, he can't let them all talk their shit, but he can unite.

“Now is the time to unite everyone.”

Racist mass text messages to black people across America spark investigation

A spate of racist text messages invoking slavery sparked alarm across the United States this week after they were sent to black men, women and students, including middle school students, prompting investigations by the FBI and other agencies.

The anonymously sent messages were reported in several states, including New York, Alabama, California, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Tennessee.

They generally used a similar tone but varied in wording.

Some asked the recipient to appear at an address “with their belongings” at a certain time, others did not specify a location.

Some of them mentioned the upcoming presidential administration.

It is not yet clear who was behind the messages, and there was no comprehensive list of where they were sent. However, among the recipients were school and college students.

The FBI said it was in contact with the Justice Department about the messages and the Federal Communications Commission said it was investigating the texts “along with federal and state law enforcement agencies.”

The Ohio Attorney General's Office also said it was reviewing the matter.

David Axelrod blames the Democrats for becoming a “smart, suburban, college-educated party.”

Barack Obama's former senior adviser has criticized the Democratic Party for its snobbery and disillusionment among working-class voters following its defeat in the US election.

In a devastating defeat for his own party, David Axelrod made it clear that Democrats are failing to reach working-class voters and large swaths of the electorate who haven't attended college.

In an interview with CNN on Thursday night, Axelrod said Democrats have become an increasingly “smart, suburban, college-educated party,” suggesting they have failed to appeal to people from lower classes and without college degrees.

“The only group the Democrats gained in Tuesday's election was white college graduates, and there was a significant decline among working-class voters,” he added.
