AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D gaming performance increases by 8% according to benchmark leak

We are just three days away from the official launch AMD Ryzen 9000X3D series, with the 9800X3D expected to be the flagship of the new gaming CPU series. As we get closer to launch, official images and performance data are leaking more and more frequently, with the latest leak reportedly showing AMD's official figures for the new chip's expected performance.

Since this processor is expected to be the new best gaming CPU option you can buy, the hype leading up to its launch has been high and there has been plenty of speculation about its performance. We've already seen Intel admit that its own upcoming Core Ultra 200 CPUs won't outperform it, and we've seen several other AMD 9800X3D benchmark leaks, but today's leak is supposedly AMD's own official numbers , and it also contains several other important details about this new chip.

The source of this information is regular tech news/leaks website Videocardz.com, which claims to have obtained AMD's seemingly official launch documentation. In this information we can see that AMD claims that the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D is the “fastest gaming processor in the world” and that it features “next generation” 3D V-Cache – a fact that was confirmed yesterday in another Leak about the 9800X3D box graphics was mentioned.

The documentation then points out that the 9800X3D has an IPC (Instructions per Clock) increase of 16%. It's not specified what this increase is being compared to, but the reasonable conclusion is that it's the 7800X3D. The 9800X3D is also claimed to deliver an 8% “generational increase” in gaming performance and a 15% increase in multi-threaded content creation performance.

These numbers would represent a decent increase in performance overall, albeit a significantly smaller increase than we've seen with players who upgraded from a 5800X3D to the 7800X3D. However, this upgrade also came with a switch from DDR4 to DDR5 RAM, and such big jumps are generally not typical.

The leak also goes into a little more detail about what AMD means by a next generation of 3D V-Cache. It details that the additional L3 cache chip located on the CPU chip enables better thermal performance and higher clock speeds compared to previous implementations. Specifically, this reportedly results in an official peak clock speed of 5.2GHz, up from 5GHz at the peak of the 7800X3D. It also makes it clear that the additional cache chip has the same 64MB capacity as previous X3D chips, giving a total of 96MB of L3 cache.

Other details mentioned include expected support for AM5 motherboards and coolers, with no modifications required to use the new chips – regardless of the motherboard BIOS update – and support for DDR5 memory.

All in all, this latest leak only reinforces the general feeling that the 9800X3D will be a fantastic gaming CPU, and one that will perhaps be even better as an all-around CPU than previous X3D chips. Provided that the leak and the many previous ones prove to be true. All that remains to be seen – aside from how we judge this chip's performance in our own testing – is how much AMD will charge for this CPU. If it costs more than $50 more than the 7800X3D, it doesn't look like good value for money.
