Savencia Cheese is reminiscent of 6 types of Brie cheese

An American cheese company voluntarily recalled a select batch of aged cheeses, excluding Brie, over the weekend due to possible listeria concerns.

Six different varieties of brie produced at a Savencia Cheese plant in the United States may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria known to cause foodborne illnesses, according to a statement from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Saturday.

The bacterium was identified in the manufacturing facility's processing equipment as a result of routine testing conducted. The cheeses had “limited regional distribution” in select stores across the country, but the few retailers that received the products were in the process of pulling them from shelves.

According to the FDA, Aldi and Market Basket are among the select retailers affected by the Savencia cheese recall. Affected states include Indiana, Missouri, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Texas, Iowa, New Jersey, California, Oregon, Colorado, Washington and Illinois.

“Consumers who own any of the recalled products listed in the table above should refrain from consuming them and return them to the location where they purchased them for a full refund,” the FDA said.

According to the FDA, there are no confirmed reports of illness or death from consuming the recalled products. Savencia Cheese USA initiated the voluntary recall in hopes of recovering the potentially affected product, which has not yet been identified.

Savencia Cheese USA did not immediately respond to USA TODAY's request for details on the regions and locations affected by the voluntary recall.

Symptoms of listeria poisoning or listeriosis

Listeria or listeriosis is a serious bacterial infection caused by eating food or food contaminated by Listeria monocytogenes. The food-borne bacterial disease usually affects immunocompromised people, young children, the elderly and pregnant women most severely.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, an estimated 1,600 people become ill with listeriosis each year and an estimated 260 die each year in the United States. The USDA warns higher-risk individuals who experience flu-like symptoms within two months of consuming contaminated food to seek medical attention and inform their healthcare provider about consuming contaminated food.

The most common symptoms include:

  • Fever
  • Muscle pain
  • Headache
  • Stiff neck
  • confusion
  • Loss of balance
  • cramps
  • Diarrhea
  • Other gastrointestinal symptoms
  • Miscarriage, stillbirth, premature birth and/or life-threatening infection of newborns
  • Death
