A bloodied, naked man has been arrested following a drug-related crime in Calera, police said

A 36-year-old man is behind bars after he was found naked, covered in blood and with damaged vehicles and homes in Calera.

Caleb Jon Sims was taken into custody early Friday and remains held without bail in the Shelby County Jail.

Calera police officers were dispatched to Camden Cove around 2:30 a.m. after a resident called 911 to report a naked man damaging vehicles and homes.

Chief David Hyche said all available officers responded and began searching for the suspect. Additional calls came in to report the suspect in another part of the neighborhood.

Hyche said “the very large male suspect” was found naked and covered in blood. He apparently injured himself in the rampage, the police said.

Sims walked toward the officers, refused their commands and was hit with a Taser stun gun and taken into custody, Hyche said.

Sims admitted to being under the influence of a controlled substance, was arrested and taken to the hospital.

Hyche said at least 18 victims with property damage have been identified.

Sims is charged with public intoxication, public indecency and disorderly conduct. Many more charges are expected because of the property damage.

“This man admitted to being under the influence of drugs and is very fortunate that a citizen or officer did not have to use deadly force to protect himself,” Hyche said.

“To everyone who has argued with me over the years that drugs are a victimless crime and criticized law enforcement for enforcing drug laws,” he said: “Camden Cove families with property damage and those affected by this event were terrorized would contradict that.”

“The suspect could have easily been a victim of his own decisions this morning,” Hyche said. “He is very fortunate that our officer had the opportunity to safely use his Taser to get him under control long enough to handcuff him. I also see the harm that drug use causes to the families of users. They too are victims.”

If you spot any damage that you believe was caused by Sims, you are asked to call Calera Police at 205-668-3505.
