500,000 units sold on Amazon were recalled after fires

More than half a million space heaters sold on Amazon are being recalled due to a safety issue, federal product regulators announced Thursday.

GoveeLife and Govee Smart Electric Space Heaters can overheat and pose a fire and burn hazard, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission published online.

According to the safety commission, about 512,500 copies were sold in the United States and about 48,600 in Canada.

Testing found the smart electric space heaters did not comply with “voluntary industry safety standard UL 1278,” which poses a risk of overheating and fire from wireless control features, the safety commission wrote in the news release.

According to the commission, there were 113 reports of overheating, including seven reports of fires and one report of a minor burn injury.

The space heaters were sold in black and white and ranged in height from 9 to 26 inches depending on the model.

What to do if your space heater is recalled?

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled product and contact the brands for a refund.

“Unplug the electric space heater from the electrical outlet, cut the power cord, and send a picture of the destroyed electric space heater, the manufacturer's label, and the SN code on the bottom or side of the device to GoveeLife or Govee using the link provided in the recall.
