Andrew Thomas Graney was arrested after 12 shots were fired at vehicles and homes

One person was injured in the series of shootings, with vehicles and homes damaged.

A student in North Carolina has been arrested in connection with a dozen shootings that occurred within days and damaged multiple vehicles and homes, police said.

Andrew Thomas Graney, 23, was charged with one count of assault with a dangerous weapon with intent to kill, inflicting serious injury, and 11 counts of discharging a weapon into an occupied vehicle or dwelling, Raleigh police wrote in a news release.

The only known person injured in the shooting is a woman who was hit in the leg on Monday, local media WRAL and the News & Observer reported. Police did not say whether anyone else was injured in the shooting.

Police suspect Graney is responsible for a series of shootings that occurred on or near I-40 this week, the release said. He was arrested around midnight Friday along with another person who has since been released without charge, the department said.

According to police, Graney is linked to two shootings on Monday, eight shootings on Wednesday and two most recent shootings on Thursday. It is unclear whether he was the sole shooter in these incidents, but police said they are working with federal, state and local law enforcement partners to identify additional people who may be responsible.

As an incentive, police are offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to the arrest of the other suspect(s).

Who is Andrew Thomas Graney?

Graney is studying anthropology at North Carolina State University and has been enrolled in college in Raleigh since 2019, spokeswoman Lauren Barker told USA TODAY in an email Friday.

According to search warrants from local media outlets, including ABC 11, police searched Graney's Hyundai Sonata and seized a handgun with a magazine, a gun case with live ammunition, a box of ammunition, spent bullet casings, a digital camera and a silver laptop.

Surveillance video also showed Graney's car in the area of one of the Nov. 6 shootings, the television station reported.

“I think for every student I've spoken to so far, it's just been a shock,” Evan Oliver, a fellow student at NC State, told ABC 11.

Treka Graney: “That’s not my son”

Treka Graney, who identified herself as Andrew Graney's mother, spoke to WRAL and said her son's arrest took her “completely by surprise.”

“It's completely out of character … he's a sweet boy,” Treka Graney told the Raleigh-based television station. “Everyone loves him. He always stands tall, he is very polite. He always follows the rules.”

During the interview with WRAL, Treka Graney repeatedly said, “That's not my son.”

“I was so proud of him and I’m still very proud of him,” she said. “I still have no idea what's going on. My children were never allowed to play with guns. Not with water guns, not with stick guns. Anything that had to do with a weapon. It was absolutely not allowed.”

As Graney was taken into custody, more than two dozen police officers crowded into a neighborhood on Kentford Court in southwest Raleigh, WRAL reported.

“All I can tell you is that the child I raised is not that child,” Treka Graney said, according to the television station.

Information about Graney's attorney was not immediately available.
