WEST WARWICK, Rhode Island (WLNE) – The Rhode Island Department of Health is currently testing material found at a Hong Kong restaurant in West Warwick last night.

According to Chef J. Jeffrey Varone, crews responded to the restaurant and found smoke coming from the basement.

According to officials, the owner smoked with a product they were unfamiliar with and for which they did not have safety data sheets.

According to a DEM spokesperson, several different emergency management agencies responded, including DEM. The Cranston Fire Department Hazardous Materials Team, Coventry Fire Department Decontamination Team and West Warwick Fire Department responded to the restaurant after an unknown insecticide fumigant was used there.

A total of six firefighters were sent to Kent County Hospital for evaluation and were released this morning.

The spokesman said there was no release into the environment as the fumes were released within the building.

The Cranston HazMat team contained the material and provided it to DEM for submission to the Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) chemistry laboratory for testing today.
