A woman was shot near Temple University on Friday – NBC10 Philadelphia

A safety alert was issued to Temple University students Friday evening after shots were fired near campus.

The shooting was reported Nov. 8 near the 1800 block of North Broad Street, according to the Temple Alert System on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Officers responded to the scene after receiving reports of a person with a weapon at 5:39 p.m., a Philadelphia Police Department spokesman said.

A woman in her early 20s was shot once in the right knee, police said. Paramedics took her to a nearby hospital.

The victim's condition is unknown, police said. A suspect has been arrested in connection with the shooting.

First Deputy Commissioner John M. Stanford told NBC10 that a traffic incident led to the shooting. Two cars were traveling south on Broad Street when the drivers began shooting at each other.

The woman was a passenger in one of the vehicles when she was hit, Stanford said. Only one of the drivers had a permit to carry a weapon.

Students and neighbors were asked to avoid the area while police investigated.

SkyForce10 was over the crime scene shortly after 6 p.m., where several police cars could be seen. The area was cordoned off with red caution tape.
