Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick caused a stir during Wednesday's game when he sat in a chair after a bad shot from D'Angelo Russell and then slammed it to the floor several times, but he delivered more on Friday Context to the situation.

Jovan Buha of The Athletic reported that Redick spoke with the guard and also explained that he wasn't upset with Russell directly, but rather with the team's “25” possessions that led to this point. He said multiple players' possession of the ball led to this reaction, although it came after a shot attempt by Russell.

As SB Nation's Harrison Faigen noted, the head coach benched the 28-year-old for most of the second half of Los Angeles' 131-114 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies.

“Just the level of competition, the attention to detail, some of the things we've been talking to him about for a couple of weeks,” Redick told reporters when discussing why he did it. “And sometimes he’s really good at it, and sometimes he just falls back into certain habits.”

The loss was the Lakers' fourth in their last five games after a promising 3-0 start in Redick's first season as head coach. That will certainly lead to some frustration, especially since he needed other players to step up their games with Anthony Davis and Rui Hachimura both out.

Instead, Russell shot 4 of 12 from the field and 2 of 9 from deep.

LeBron James single-handedly led the offense with 39 points, seven rebounds and six assists for long stretches, but didn't get nearly enough help from his teammates. And the head coach wasn't happy about it.
