Teacher's assistant in Matteson arrested after allegedly abusing student – NBC Chicago

An assistant teacher at a school in suburban Matteson was arrested Friday after he allegedly grabbed and dragged an 8-year-old student at Marya Yates Elementary School, officials said.

According to police, just before the end of the school day, an 8-year-old male student was running down the hallway when a 26-year-old teacher aide allegedly grabbed the student and threw him to the ground, dragging him about 20 feet into a classroom.

As she approached the classroom, the aide forcefully pushed the child into the room with her foot while trying to close the door, authorities said.

Initially unsuccessful, she then allegedly entered her room and again pushed the child further into the room with her foot before closing the door, police said.

The student then filed a complaint with school officials, and an investigation was immediately initiated by school staff, the school resource officer and the Matteson Police Department.

A review of the school's security footage confirmed the student's claims and led to the arrest of the assistant teacher, who is charged with assault and endangering the life and health of a child.

Police did not release the identity of the assistant teacher and the student has not reported any injuries.

No further information was available.

Note: An earlier version of this story reported that the student was 10 years old, as originally reported by police. This has been corrected after receiving updated information.
