The assistant teacher was arrested for assault and child endangerment at Marya Yates Elementary School, according to Matteson police

MATTESON, Ill. (WLS) – A teacher's assistant was arrested at a southern suburbs elementary school on Friday after allegedly endangering the life of a young student.

Police said the alleged incident was captured on school surveillance cameras. The teacher's assistant was taken into custody following an investigation.

The incident happened just before the end of the school day at Marya Yates Elementary School on Allemong Drive in Matteson, police told ABC7.

The suspect, a 26-year-old woman who works as a teacher's aide at the school, allegedly grabbed an 8-year-old male student who was running in the hallway, Matteson police said.

A news release from Matteson police said the student was allegedly “slammed to the ground.” The teacher's assistant dragged the child about 20 feet into a classroom. She tried to close the door but was unable to do so, so she entered the room and again pushed the child further into the room so he could close the door .

The student, who reported no injuries, filed a report. School officials then examined and reviewed security footage of the incident.

The teacher's assistant was arrested by the Matteson Police Department's School Resource Officer, police said. “Charges of assault and endangering the life and health of a child are pending.”

“Our school district is aware of the incident, the employee involved has been placed on leave pending the outcome of the investigation,” School District 159 Superintendent Tiffany Brunson said in a statement.

The child was not seriously injured in the incident. The school employee was arrested at the school, police confirmed.
