Police are still working to solve an unsolved murder case plaguing the South Florida landmark

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Florida – The year was 1959.

At just six years old, Robert Moehling began selling cucumbers on the side of the road, hoping to help his family in need.

It was the humble beginnings of “Robert is Here” when young Robert became a roadside fixture.

His small stand would one day become an icon amid the sprawling farmlands of South Florida.

Today's Miami-Dade County landmark, Robert Is Here, features exotic fruits, baked goods, vegetables and famous milkshakes. Decades later, tragedy struck.

In 1992, Robert's mother, Mary Moehling, who came up with the idea for this homemade sign, was brutally murdered.

“Her son arrived at the property … and found his mother,” said Juan Segovia, a Miami-Dade police homicide detective.

Moehling found her body himself, a devastating memory that would haunt him for a lifetime. She was strangled and brutally murdered.

“I found something the wrong way round, it was my mother,” he said.

Just weeks after the murder, Hurricane Andrew devastated South Florida, dealing another blow to the family. It took 15 years for them to fully recover.

“Hurricane Andrew wiped everyone out,” Moehling said.

Despite years of investigation, the murderer was never found. Miami-Dade police still consider the case open as new DNA technology gives them a glimmer of hope.

“The circle of suspects is very large,” said Segovia.

After 65 years, Moehling still hopes for justice for his mother.

“It made me tougher. Now I’m getting even weaker,” he said.
