The accessory that has gone viral among Generation Z and Millennials

A new trend has arrived on the mobile phones of our young people and it seems that there has been a “baby boom” in our smartphones!

“Sonny Angel” the viral phenomenon

The collecting fever has reached Spain with a new product. This time the protagonists are very “flirtatious” little babies who are placed on the mobile phone (and even on the laptop). And it is very well received by the young public.

Why is it important?

These characters, known as “Sonny Angels,” represent a perfect intersection between online culture, millennial nostalgia, and the viral phenomenon of TikTok. And of course, there are those who don't miss the opportunity to take advantage of this, and it has become one market that moves millions of euros.

But… where do these little dolls come from?

It turns out these babies were born in Japan in 2004! And its creator was Toru Soeya. These tiny babies, measuring no more than 7 centimeters tall, have become the latest object of desire for Generation Z and some Millennials (who are struggling not to look so old… but their knees say otherwise).

These babies have a minimalist design, they are naked babies with different hats depending on the theme (there are fruit hats, animal hats and other themes like “summer”).

And the strategy is very, very simple and basic, they come in surprise boxes.

You may be wondering: Not knowing what you're going to get produces the same kind of dopamine as likes on Instagram.

Let's talk numbers.

It may seem like nonsense, but this little fat-assed babe is making a lot of money.

  1. The average price of the doll is between 12 and 30 euros (each!!!), although of course there are already some who have released unofficial and much cheaper versions.
  2. There are more than 600 different models (imagine wanting to collect them all…)
  3. 3 million units sold per year

You only have to do the math to know that they are making a fortune.

And the fact is that although their most sought-after version is the “Hipper” doll (which is specifically designed to be placed on the top of cell phones and fit perfectly), these dolls have been so successful that if you look at the website visited the brand, practically all the units are sold out.

A great marketing campaign

We have already seen that on TikTok everything is moving fast and furiously, almost like lightning, and with these babies it was no less, it was incredible the boost given by the world-famous influencers and celebrities such as Victoria Beckham or Rosalía, who are on their photos that showed Sonny Angels in their iPhone cases.

Likewise, the brand has adapted to the market and welcomed with open arms the advertising of these major influencers in the world of networks. One of the most strategic collaborations she has ever undertaken was with Casetify, one of the largest cell phone case manufacturers, with whom they designed a completely exclusive Sonny Angel case.

And why so much success when they are… dolls?

First of all, their adorable design (or as it is known worldwide “kawaii”) elicits the necessary reactions from the audience it is aimed at. Followed by the hook effect of buying something that you don't really know what it will be like inside (the surprise effect creates a huge addiction and they take advantage of that).

On the other hand, it is something that is integrated into mobile phones, so they take it with them everywhere and make it visible, so our young people, who are also present on social networks, show it all the time.

The price is high enough to be desirable, but cheap enough to create a massive purchase effect (who wouldn't buy their kids a $15 device just to see them happy?
