Bloomberg: Mike Rogers is being considered for defense secretary

Congressman Mike Rogers of Alabama, chairman of the House Defense Committee, is being considered for defense secretary in the new Trump administration, according to sources close to the process. Bloomberg government reported late Friday.

Rogers (R-Saks), who has served in Alabama's 3rd Congressional District since 2003, was contacted by President-elect Donald Trump's transition team as it began forming a new Cabinet following Trump's election victory.

Bloomberg described Rogers as “one of the minds behind the creation of the Space Force and has consistently advocated for improving the military quality of life and introducing innovative new technologies at the Pentagon.” He is negotiating the annual defense authorization bill with his Senate colleagues and pushing for a comprehensive one Legislation to increase salaries of young soldiers, among many other provisions.”

Accordingly Bloomberg, Rogers is a new addition to the list of officials being considered for top national security positionsFormer Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and other current serving members of the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate.

Rogers has not yet publicly commented on his consideration for the role and did not respond to a request for comment late Friday Yellowhammer news. The Trump-Vance transition team also has not commented on possible Cabinet appointments beyond naming longtime Republican activist Susie Wiles as White House chief of staff.
