ForbesNYT “Strands” Tips, Spangram and Answers for Friday, November 8th

I'm back! After a two week break while my colleagues Kris Holt and Paul Tassi took over the Strands guides here at Forbes Games, I've returned! I'm glad to be back, especially as the days are getting colder and I'm more inclined than ever to hide inside and play games – puzzlers, shooters, RPGs, whatever. Give me all the games and then give me about six more hours a day so I actually have time to play them. At least with Strands it happens pretty quickly. Today is fun, let's solve it!

Strands is the latest game in the New York Times puzzle game series. It's a fun twist on classic word search games. Each day we are given a new topic and then have to reveal all the words on the grid that fit that topic, including a spangram that spans two sides of the board. One of those words is this Spangram This goes from one side of the grid to the other and reveals even more about the topic of the day.

Spoilers ahead.

Today's Beach Tips

Today's topic: Generational jam.

Clue #1: The Grunge Era.

Note #2: Musical performances.

To make it easier for you to uncover all the words, I usually include the first two letters of each word, including the spangram. Today I'm going to use song titles instead.

  • “Santeria”
  • “Park Life”
  • “Heart-shaped box”
  • “Lateralus”
  • “Champagne Supernova”
  • “Cut your hair”

Remember, spoilers ahead!

What are today's Strands answers?

Today's Spangram is: 90'S TAPES

Here is the full list of words:

  • SUBLIMATE
  • BLUR
  • NIRVANA
  • TOOL
  • OASIS
  • WALKWAY

Here is the finished Strands grid:

Today's Strands breakdown

This has been one of my favorite Strands puzzles so far, but that's because I grew up listening to all these bands when there was still music Impressive. I found SUBLIME almost immediately and then BLUR, closely followed by NIRVANA. At this point I was thinking about '90s Bands' as a possible reference for this guide – when I saw BANDS on the grid and, working backwards, found the Spangram. So much for that note! The left half of the grid was harder, but after finding OASIS and TOOL, all I was left with was PAVEMENT, probably the band I'm least familiar with of the entire group. However, I think that “Generation Jam” is actually a lousy “theme” for today’s Strands. When I think of “jam,” I think of jam bands like The Grateful Dead, not Nirvana.
