The then-No. 4 Buckeyes overcame an early 10-point deficit to defeat the then-No. 3 Penn State Nittany Lions, 20-13, on November 2nd.

Ohio State (7-1, 4-1 Big Ten) was ranked second in the inaugural College Football Playoff rankings released Nov. 5. Their only loss is a one-point deficit to now top-ranked Oregon.

Ohio State touts a plus-25.8 point margin this season, including a plus-33.8 margin at home. The Buckeyes are averaging 30 points all-time against the Boilermakers.

Ohio State's prolific offense is led by senior quarterback Will Howard. He threw for 1,977 yards and 19 touchdowns (tied for first in the Big Ten) and threw five interceptions. Howard is completing 73.2% of his passes and has a QBR of 84.2, which is the eighth highest in the country.

Freshman sensation Jeremiah Smith recorded 39 receptions for 678 yards and eight receiving touchdowns (tied for second in the Big Ten) while averaging 17.4 yards per reception. In the win over Penn State, Smith failed to score a touchdown for the first time this season. He had completed seven straight games with at least one touchdown.

Senior receiver Emeka Egbuka often finds himself out of the spotlight. He has 46 receptions for 577 yards and seven touchdowns, averaging 12.5 yards per reception.

The rushing attack is averaging 185.6 yards per game and continues its 1-2 jab, while junior running back Quinshon Judkins has 95 carries for 615 yards and six touchdowns. Senior running back TreVeyon Henderson has 72 carries for 503 yards and four touchdowns.

The offensive line silenced the doubters as Ohio State racked up 176 rushing yards against Penn State to power its offense.

The Buckeyes' defense was the difference in escaping Happy Valley last week. They held Penn State to less than 300 yards of total offense.

Ohio State allows the third-fewest points per game (12.0) and 256.4 yards of total offense per game. They allow the seventh fewest rushing yards in the country.

Junior safety Sonny Styles tallied 21 solo tackles, while senior defensive back JT Tuimoloau recorded 4.5 sacks and 17 solo tackles. Senior cornerback Denzel Burke has two interceptions and 19 solo tackles.

Ohio State leads the all-time series 42-15-2. They are 8-0 against the Boilermakers at Ohio Stadium since 1989. They are 9-5 at West Lafayette. The Buckeyes won the last meeting 41-7.

The Boilermakers (1-7, 0-5) are having one of their toughest seasons in recent memory. After beating Indiana State in the season opener, Purdue has lost its last seven games.

They are the only Big Ten team to have won a conference game to date.

Purdue is scoring 119th in the country (20.2 points) and has a lead of minus-26 points, which is second-worst in the country.

Senior quarterback Hudson Card has played in six games, throwing for 1,005 yards, eight touchdowns and four interceptions. Card has thrown for more than 200 yards and completed 61.7% of his passes in just two games. He is expected to make his second straight start since returning from a concussion.

His top target, second-year tight end Max Klare, has hauled in 30 receptions for 462 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 15.4 yards per reception.

Junior receiver Jahmal Edrine has 15 receptions for 215 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 14.3 yards per reception.

The Boilermakers' ground game averages 149 yards per game.

Junior running back Devin Mockobee hauled in 91 carries for 539 yards and three touchdowns. The values are minimal, but the mileage is noticeable. He has two 100-yard games this season. Northwestern held him to just 29 yards.

Senior running back Reggie Love III is also an option as he has 60 carries for 325 yards and two touchdowns.

If the Boilermakers want to make some magic, they'll need plenty of playmaking from CJ Smith, the second-year transfer receiver from Georgia who played in his first game of the season, a 26-20 OT loss to Northwestern. It was their second overtime loss of the season. Smith hauled in four receptions for 55 yards.

Purdue's defense has bled all season. They rank last in the Big Ten in total defense and 16th in pass defense. The running game isn't much better, allowing over 200 rushing yards per game. They are allowing an average of 36.9 points and 448.1 yards per game.

Senior linebacker Kydran Jenkins leads the unit with 35 solo tackles and 5.5 sacks. Second-year defensive end Will Heldt also posted 26 solo tackles and five sacks. Second-year defensive lineman Dillon Thieneman has 42 solo tackles.

It's well-documented that “spoiler makers” tend to show up when you least expect them. In 2018, then-No. 3 Ohio State traveled to unranked Purdue and was blown out 49-20. That was the last unranked team to beat Ohio State.

As staggering as the stats may seem, the Buckeyes can't overlook this opponent, just as they slept through most of the Nebraska game (facing Penn State) and were able to pull out a narrow victory in the end.

Purdue has never beaten Ohio State in the Horseshoe.
