The S&P 500 rose on Thursday as the benchmark rebounded after three consecutive losing sessions. Strong returns Tesla and others led the gains.

The broad market index rose 0.1%, and the Nasdaq Composite increased by 0.4%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lagged behind, losing 169 points or 0.4%.

Tesla rose more than 17% after the electric vehicle maker reported third-quarter results that beat analysts' expectations. Jacuzzi And Lam research also rose about 12.5% ​​and 3.8%, respectively, on better-than-expected earnings.

The weighing up of the Dow was IBMwhich fell by more than 6.5% as consulting revenue narrowly missed analysts' estimates. Boeing also weighed on the 30-stock index as the company's shares fell more than 2% after its machinists rejected a new labor contract.

More than 32% of the S&P 500 has reported third-quarter numbers so far. According to FactSet, 76% of these companies exceeded analyst expectations.

Stocks have been on a losing streak, with the Dow suffering its biggest one-day loss since early December, shedding more than 400 points on Wednesday. The S&P 500 lost nearly 1% and the Nasdaq lost 1.6%.

Treasury yields fell early Thursday, helping to lift market sentiment after rising yields kept stocks under pressure this week. The 10-year Treasury yield crossed 4.25% at the session's high on Wednesday.

“The pressure on the market came from the interest rate side,” said Rob Haworth, senior investment strategist at US Bank Asset Management. “That's really what has dampened enthusiasm in the stock market, and there hasn't been enough earnings news yet to push the market to a new high…we're not seeing the broad momentum that we've seen either.”
