Liverpool host Aston Villa late on Saturday as Arne Slot's side look to enter the international break top of the Premier League.

The Reds go into the game with a 4-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League and a win over Villa caps a fine week that also saw Slot's team celebrate a comeback win against Brighton last weekend. Liverpool have won eight of their 10 league games and hold a two-point lead over reigning champions Manchester City, although any slip-up could see the team slip down the table.

Losing points against Villa is a realistic possibility. Unai Emery's men have made a strong start to the season and are currently sixth in the table despite being in poor form. A shock 4-1 defeat to Tottenham last weekend was followed by a 1-0 loss to Club Brugge after Tyrone Mings made a catastrophic mistake during the week.

Taking points from Liverpool at Anfield would change Villa's form and send them into the break with some momentum. Can they do that?

These two teams have met 181 times in the past, with the first meeting dating back to 1894. Liverpool have won 91 times, Villa have won 52 times and have drawn 38 times.

The last time the two teams met, towards the end of last season in mid-May, there was a 3-3 draw at Villa Park, although Liverpool comfortably ran out a 3-0 win in this game the last time they met.

One of the ongoing saga surrounding Liverpool is the contract negotiations with Mo Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk, all of whom are out of contract next summer.

Arne Slot was repeatedly asked if there was any news about the discussions and he replied that they concerned the players and sporting director Richard Hughes and would remain internal.

Slot said: “It would be strange if I didn’t have any input. Generally, contract situations are discussed by the people who should be discussing them. I’m talking to Richard about it and that’s where it should be, not in front of a microphone.”
