Peroxide leak in Gulf Breeze prompts evacuations and shelter-in-place orders

GULF BREEZE, Fla. – Two Gulf Breeze homes have been evacuated and others are being asked to shelter in place after a peroxide leak Thursday morning.

It happened in the 2700 block of Gulf Breeze Parkway.

According to Santa Rosa County, a 2,500-gallon tank containing 50% peroxide began leaking. Two homes on Great Oaks Drive have been evacuated while others in the area are asked to shelter in place:

  • Glen Oak Circle
  • Great Oaks Drive
  • Tiger Trace Blvd
  • Safari dish
  • Whisper Cove Blvd
  • Jaguar circle

A reverse 911 emergency call was sent to the affected addresses.

According to the county, the leak coincided with a brush fire that was extinguished at 10:15 a.m

The district adds that a slight cloud of steam emerged from the leak, but as of 10:15 a.m. the tank was no longer leaking.

While ordering emergency shelter, you should:

  • Bring all people and pets indoors.
  • Close and lock exterior doors and secure all windows.
  • Turn off all fans and air conditioning.
  • Close the fireplace damper.
  • Stay inside until you are told it is safe.

Escambia County units are assisting.
