A fatal crash closes US Highway 160 west of Durango

One person was killed and another was seriously injured in a two-vehicle collision west of Durango on Wednesday.

The crash was reported around 2:40 p.m. in the 15000 block of U.S. Highway 160, which is near milepost 77 and the Durango West II subdivision. The accident involved a Toyota Corolla and a tractor-trailer pulling a Walmart trailer.

Highway 160 was closed for approximately five hours following the accident. According to a news release from the Colorado Department of Transportation, the highway reopened in both directions as of 8 p.m.

One person died at the scene and another was flown by CareFlight in critical condition, Colorado State Patrol Trooper Sherri Mendez said.

The wreckage blocked both lanes.

The highway was closed at 3:05 p.m. and traffic was diverted to Wildcat Canyon Road (County Road 141) and La Plata Highway (Colorado Highway 140).

Further information was not initially available on Wednesday evening.
