Driver arrested on suspicion of drug use after fatal crash in Monroe Co

MONROE COUNTY, Wis. (WMTV) – A man was arrested Thursday after his car swerved into the other lane in Monroe County and struck another vehicle, killing one person and seriously injuring another.

The accident occurred Thursday after a GMC Sierra driven by a 39-year-old Tomah man entered the westbound lane of Highway A west of county Highway T, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.

The GMC Sierra crashed into a Chevrolet Spark and the driver, a 69-year-old Tomah man, died as a result of his injuries. One passenger was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The sheriff's office says that before the crash, law enforcement was trying to find the GMC Sierra after it crashed into a sign in the town of Sparta.

Initial investigation revealed that the driver of the GMC Sierra was under the influence of illegal drugs. He was arrested and taken to the Monroe County Jail. He faces charges including murder by driving a motor vehicle while intoxicated, reckless homicide and driving after suspension causing death.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office was assisted by the Monroe County 911 Communications Center, Sparta Police, Wisconsin State Patrol, Sparta Ambulance, Tomah Ambulance, Wilton EMS, Norwalk Fire Department, Norwalk First Responders, GundersenAir, Monroe County Medical Examiner and Monroe County Highway supports department.
