STATE COLLEGE – Penn State football will show the college football world how to recover and prepare for the College Football Playoff tonight.

The No. 7 Nittany Lions (7-1, 4-1 Big Ten) will look to overcome a steady, balanced but unspectacular Washington Huskies team that has won little more than it has lost.

To accomplish that, the Lions will need to use another disappointing loss to the Ohio State Buckeyes to recalibrate and improve — especially on offense.

They need to own another white-out night at Beaver Stadium.

The only official, fully present white-out crowd in the stadium should give their team a boost of energy as they begin a run of four November games in which they will be the overwhelming favorites.

Can Drew Allar and his disappearing wide receivers find success tonight against the second-largest passing defense in the country? Can Penn State's highly regarded tailback pairing of Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen find their early-season groove?

The PSU defense will also have its hands full. They should have solid success if they can contain the Huskies' most reliable producer, tailback Jonah Coleman. He is No. 17 nationally with 889 rushing yards (6.3 per carry).

Penn State's drive to the expanded playoffs continues tonight. It must win its final four games to ensure induction, including a possible opening game at Beaver Stadium.

Penn State football vs. Washington score updates

The Nittany Lions put on a rebounding exercise in every way tonight.

They played their most dominant first half against a Big Ten opponent in recent memory.

They scored four touchdowns on four possessions. Each trip lasted eight or more games. They went an impressive 7-for-7 on third downs. They averaged 6.6 yards per play.

The defense gave up just 71 yards, including 12 on the ground. Abdul Carter had two more tackles for loss. Jaylen Reed had another interception.

They lead 28-0.

Finally, Julian Fleming scored his homecoming touchdown.

The Penn State star and Ohio State transfer scored his first Nittany Lion touchdown in the final 30 seconds of the first half on an 8-yard slant pass from Drew Allar.

It was the third straight touchdown the Lions scored on a third-down play tonight. Incredibly, it was the first time this season that a Penn State wideout scored a touchdown in Big Ten play.

It was only Fleming's 12th reception of his senior season. His first touchdown since Ohio State's 54-10 win over Iowa on October 22, 2022.

Penn State leads 28-0 at halftime.

The best tight end in America is about getting it done, once again, through creative means.

The 6-foot-2 Warren scored his second Wildcat touchdown of the night from the 2-yard line. This time he took the direct snap on third down and instead of jumping over the middle of the huddle, he ran left and ran over a defender at the goal line.

Warren now has three runs for seven yards and those two scores. He caught two passes for 32 yards.

Penn State's defense is starting to let Washington quarterback Will Rogers and Co. shine.

Midway through the second quarter, Rogers was sacked twice. His offense managed just 58 yards, no points.

And star safety Jaylen Reed just made him pay again. Reed easily completed his third pass of the season after a dropped Rogers pass.

Penn State is back on the move at 14-0.

The Nittany Lions received their second straight first down inside the 10-yard line.

Those failures last Saturday against Ohio State?

Well, more creativity tonight.

Backup QB Beau Pribula ran Penn State's first shot from the 8.

Then, just moments later, tight end Tyler Warren grabbed the wild QB snap at the 2-yard line and jumped over the tackler and blocker in “Superman” mode with the ball outstretched.

He scored.

Penn State is killing it. The Lions lead 14-0 midway through the second quarter.

Nick Singleton and Beau Pribula and Penn State's running game had quite the opening statement tonight.

Singleton ran for more yards on the opening drive (31) and often plowed through tacklers, as he had done throughout the loss to Ohio State (15).

Pribula capped the seven-play opening drive by entering the game as the Lions scored a first down at the Washington 8-yard line.

On the first play, he kept the ball, sprinted around the left side and plunged into the end zone to take an early lead.

The Nittany Lions started the season on a solid note behind young talent Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen. They ran through West Virginia, Bowling Green, Kent State and Illinois.

Then came injuries (Singleton) and tougher Big Ten competition.

The Lions have so far gone from averaging about 250 rushing yards per game in the first half of the season to just over 120 yards in the second half of the season.

They haven't had a 100-yard rusher since the Illinois game on Sept. 28. Allen had 102 yards and Singleton added 94.

Now PSU must get back to winning against a Washington defense that was vulnerable to the run. The Huskies rank 74th nationally averaging 151 yards per game.

Sixth-grader Hakeem Beamon is no longer part of the program, team officials confirmed today, but did not provide a reason.

The once-promising lineman and former starter's playing time gradually decreased this season. He managed just three tackles for a deficit of 1.5 and ranked fifth in the defensive tackle rotation.

His Penn State career ends with 40 tackles, four pass breakups and 10.5 tackles for loss in 45 games (18 starts).
