JJ Redick breaks his silence about the virus outbreak during the Lakers-Grizzlies

The JJ Redick era has been up and down for the Los Angeles Lakers, as the team was on a three-game winning streak at the start of the season but has suffered two straight losses since then. Currently the seventh seed in the Western Conference, the team had a viral moment with their 131-114 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies earlier this week.

In an attempt to find a solution after the team's poor road trip, Redick decided to leave guard D'Angelo Russell out of the starting lineup after the team's loss to the Grizzlies. During their match against the Grizzlies, Redick showed his frustration after Russell was blocked on a jump shot by Grizzlies center Jay Huff.

The moment exploded online as several major media outlets shared the clip on social media.

In his comments to the media about his viral moment in Memphis, the first-year head coach said the following, according to the Orange County Register:

“I think of myself as a player, now as a coach. When I watch NBA games and analyze NBA games, I’m certainly not a zombie,” Redick said. “That’s what we call non-passionate, non-competitive, non-expressive people. I'm not a zombie. That's why I don't like seeing myself in that light.

Of the moment itself, Redick added, “When I watched the video, I actually forgot it happened. I want to make something clear, D-Lo and I talked about this: This wasn't directed at him. Yes, it came.” after a shot in the corner that he fired there [were] 25 plays leading up to this, by different players.”

There was a general frustration with how things were going that contributed to Redick's reaction.

“And you're 1-3 on a road trip and you get to a point where you feel like you're in a ball game on the road and a game like that happens and you release some emotions, but they weren't targeted. “D-Lo,” Redick added. “It was more focused on the series of plays over two and a half quarters that had taken place before that, not D-Lo's shot.”

Based on the comments, Redick was careful to clear the air and make sure his courtside outburst was not directed at Russell, but rather at the combination of everything that had happened.

The Grizzlies and Lakers meet again on Wednesday when Memphis travels to Los Angeles.
