The Owatonna Public Schools administrator claims drug use got him “addicted” to child pornography.

OWATONNA, Minn. (KTTC) – Jeremy Alvarez, an administrator for Owatonna Public Schools, claimed he became “addicted” to child pornography during a time when he was struggling with methamphetamines and cocaine, according to court documents.

Alvarez was arrested Tuesday and charged with five counts of possession of child pornography.

Parents were made aware of the arrest of the second-shift high school administrator through a letter sent to the school district.

Investigators received a cyber tip from Yahoo on October 15 and were able to link a number of accounts to Alvarez, including anonymous accounts on Instagram, Kik and Telegram.

After working with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, investigators found five videos that “meet the threshold” of child pornography of a minor under 14 years old.

Through an approved search warrant, investigators met with Alvarez, who provided the details of his accounts. Alvarez said his phone was the “best place to look for evidence of child pornography.”

Alvarez also admitted that “nudity was visible on Kik” when he used it.

He told investigators that he used methamphetamine and cocaine and that during that time he became “addicted” to child pornography.

Alvarez told investigators that he never met anyone and primarily used Telegram to obtain illegal materials for about five years.

Alvarez is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.
