Asheville police are searching for the suspect in the shooting death of a woman


Police were searching Saturday for a man suspected of shooting a woman near the South French Broad neighborhood.

ASHEVILLE – City police were searching for a man suspected of shooting a woman near Aston Park on South French Broad Avenue on Nov. 9.

Asheville police officers responded to a welfare check at a home in the 100 block of South French Broa around 11 a.m. on Nov. 9, where they found 26-year-old Makayla Lashea Harrison dead of an apparent gunshot wound, according to a news release.

Investigators have identified the suspect in the shooting as Darren Lamon Clayton, 30. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Clayton remained at large late Saturday, according to the news release.

This is the 11th homicide reported in the Asheville metropolitan area so far this year.

Police are asking anyone with information to come forward.
