MT. Vernon police arrest a man on multiple charges following a domestic incident

Mt. Vernon police arrested a man on multiple charges after receiving a report of a handgun being involved in a domestic dispute in the 200 block of South 19th Street around 12:40 p.m. Tuesday.

Roderick Burnett Jr. was taken to the Jefferson County Jail and charged with armed violence, felon in possession of a firearm, aggravated assault, disorderly conduct and aggravated cruelty to animals.

Authorities notified local schools of the incident, prompting them to take security measures due to the proximity of the situation.

As part of the investigation, police obtained a search warrant for Burnett's apartment. During the search, officers and investigators discovered a firearm, ammunition and the remains of deceased dogs in advanced deterioration.
