People with Typhlosion tattoos react to leaked Pokémon story

The leaked Pokémon stories have shaken the PokeWorld to its core. Who would have thought that the deviants who wrote Ash/Lucario love stories on AO3 weren't far off from what Game Freak had been writing all along?

From tales of Pokémon/human relationships to epic revenge sagas, these fables borrow generously from real-world mythologies to tell twisted tales of Typhlosion tricks and Slakoth sadness. I was worried that the stories might have ruined some of my favorite Pokemon, and as a Cyndaquil stan at TheGamer, I wouldn't feel the same if my beloved starter knew that Game Freak had this darker story planned all along.

Some of this depth adds depth to the world, but other parts are a bit too explicit for me. But what about people with Pokémon tattoos? Imagine loving a “mon” so much that you get it permanently engraved into your skin just for, well, The happen. I reached out to some tattooed PokeFans to see if the leaks have changed how they feel about their favorite monsters and the tattoos themselves.

The first person I contacted is called “LilSlothie” and has the entire Slakoth line tattooed on him. When I messaged her, she knew nothing about the leaked information and questioned its veracity. I appreciated their cynicism in our world of misinformation, but I had no plans to explain these dark stories to anyone when I began researching this article.

“I'm glad the woman kept the Slakoth and raised it. If I had one I would take care of it, Slakoth are my babies,” she tells me. “I would love to live by Lake Slakoth! But I think this is incorrect information given to you, as I highly doubt Pokémon would release a backstory about Slakoth Pokémon that is so morbid and dark.”

Peter, who has a Hisuian Typhlosion tattoo, understands a little more where Game Freak came from.

“[I] I don't have Twitter so I can't read [the] Context, but if this is just draft history and based on myth, I don’t really care,” he says. “How many stories are there in Western culture about gods and mythical figures transforming themselves to sleep with women? Since it looks like it was dropped and shot down, it sounds like someone was doing their job.

“Let me be clear: I disagree with the story. I just understand where [Game Freak was] I’m trying to tell a mythical story.”

Peter likes the idea of the direction Pokémon wanted to go, if not necessarily the content within it. But even if that wasn't the case, they wouldn't have any bearing on his feelings about his tattoo.

“My tattoo is for my first Pokemon starter in a long time,” he explains. “No influence [from] Lore or flavor text from Typhlosion. I'm sure there were tons of applications that were rejected for good reasons. You can't blame the world builders for presenting ideas. IP owners filter out what they want to keep and accept. Honestly, as an adult, I wish the world would grow as I did. I didn't remain a 10-year-old boy. My world views have changed. Why not add a little history, as long as it’s family friendly?”

“Sounds like they had a brainstorming session, like series writers do. [It] I didn’t make it, so I’m not worried about it.”

While her feelings about the leaks vary, LilSlothie agrees with Peter about her ink.

“[It] “It doesn’t change anything,” she tells me. “I've always been obsessed with/loved the Slakoth Line, and if the story were true, I'd be happy that the Slakoth Line would fight back because the people are idiots and I'd love to live on Lake Slakoth !” They will always be my number one babies.”

My last interviewee is a little different because she got a tattoo after The leak was revealed and we obviously knew all about it before we started our conversation.

“I had already planned the tattoo before the leaks, the design was ready,” explains Paula. Her ink contains Cyndaquil, Quilava, Typhlosion, and Hisuian Typhlosion. “They're my favorite Pokémon, and if I remember correctly, the leaks happened the day before I was supposed to get a tattoo. It was just a funny coincidence.”

“If anything, it made me want the tattoo even more. I'm not saying I agree with what the Pokémon do in these stories, but it's not like the leaks are canon. And even if it were, and it wasn't a mistranslation, it's just a way to tell folkloric stories and fairy tales in the Pokémon world, like Greek myths.”

Paula understands that the timing of her tattoo could have been better, but it's easy to laugh at some non-canon lore leaks.

“I mentioned it [to] My artist and we laughed together because in the end it really doesn't matter, it's just funny how everyone blows things out of proportion,” she says. “If you don't hurt or offend anyone, people should just enjoy the things they like and not care about other people's opinions.”

With her parting comment, Paula echoes the thoughts of many Typhlosion fans as they talk about the leaks, the possible mistranslations, and the non-canon nature of everything left on the cutting room floor: “Leave my boy Typhlosion alone, he's innocent .”
