Memphis football linebacker Karmelo Overton was injured and hospitalized

Memphis football linebacker Karmelo Overton was taken to Regional One Medical Center after collapsing on the field at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium during the Tigers' game against Rice.

Overton was hit by two Rice players on a kickoff and was briefly on the field. He got up and ran to the Memphis sideline, but his legs gave out and he lay on the field for an extended period of time. During the extended time off, he was surrounded by members of the training staff and teammates.

Memphis coach Ryan Silverfield said Overton was able to communicate and talk after the Tigers' 17-13 win.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with him,” Silverfield said. “We are still doing some testing at a local hospital. But I ask Tiger fans to stay in your thoughts and prayers.”

Trainers eventually put Overton on a stretcher and placed him on a cart. The Tigers' radio broadcast said he had been taken to the hospital. A further update on his condition was not immediately available.

Overton, a redshirt freshman, made one tackle this season.
