According to police, a woman was arrested for drunk driving and causing a traffic accident that led to the emergency delivery of a pregnant passenger

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) – Police say a woman was arrested after she was driving under the influence and collided with another vehicle, leaving a pregnant passenger with serious injuries.

According to officers, witnesses said they saw 28-year-old Cassandra Tokarski cross double yellow lines to pass another vehicle and go through a stop sign before colliding with another car at the intersection.

This happened at the intersection of East Riverside Drive and Pollack Avenue.

They say both occupants of the other car were taken to the hospital, including the pregnant passenger.

According to authorities who later went to the hospital, the woman who was in the other car was given an emergency birth and was told that the newborn was “sick.”

The hospital staff told them that the pregnant woman hit the back of the passenger seat violently during the collision, which led to the emergency birth of the child.

Hospital officials say the baby required resuscitation after delivery and is currently in the neonatal intensive care unit.

Officers on scene said they smelled alcohol coming from Tokarski and saw alcoholic beverages in her vehicle.

Tokarski was arrested after officers conducted a field sobriety test.

They say police reviewed security footage from a nearby business that showed Tokarski drifting into the path of the other vehicle, leading to the crash.

Tokarski was medically cleared and booked into the Vanderburgh County Jail on multiple charges.

As of 11 a.m. Sunday, Tokarski is being held on a $5,000 bond.
