The Syracuse University Department of Public Safety is investigating a bias incident in which a student reported hearing someone use a racial slur in a neighboring apartment on South Campus on Wednesday, Nov. 6.

According to a DPS release Friday afternoon, DPS has since met with the student who reported the incident and the resident of the apartment where the slur was allegedly heard. DPS did not say whether a suspect was identified or determined to be associated with SU.

“We hold our community members and all visitors to our campus to high standards and expect them to behave respectfully toward others,” said Craig Stone, DPS chief and assistant vice president, in the release. “I appreciate the reporting party’s decision to reach out to us with this information so our team can work toward a resolution.”

According to the release, DPS has also referred the incident to SU's Office of Community Standards for further review. Stone urged anyone with information about the incident to contact the department.
