The three-hour manhunt in Havana ends with the arrest of a suspect who is said to have escaped police custody

MASON COUNTY (25News Now) – Authorities found a man who allegedly escaped from the custody of a Mason County sheriff's deputy in Havana early Sunday.

Preston Carle, 25, of Macomb, allegedly pushed the deputy and ran out of the sheriff's office around 4:30 a.m

In a news release, the sheriff said Carle was found hiding in the backyard of a home in Havana around 7:30 a.m.

The deputy was investigating a battery when he initially took Carle into custody.

According to a post on the department's Facebook page, Carle was not handcuffed and he allegedly lied to the deputy about his name.

Online court records show Carle was wanted in McDonough County for failing to appear in court for his sentencing in September on a retail theft conviction.

“Mr. “Carle has made poor decisions in the past, and today's actions show he has no desire to change his behavior,” Mason County Sheriff Paul Gann said in a statement.

According to Mason County authorities, Havana police, the Fulton County Sheriff's Office and local citizens were involved in the search.

Carle is now charged with, among other things, escape and serious bodily harm against a police officer.
