Trump has his eye on New York Rep. Elise Stefanik for a post at the United Nations

New York GOP Rep. Elise Stefanik is tipped to be President-elect Trump's new ambassador to the United Nations.

Stefanik, the influential chairwoman of the House Republican Conference, is considered a Trump favorite because of her aggressive defense of his policies.

Trump wants to promote Stefanik to the powerful diplomatic post in New York City, according to five people who spoke to Politico about the matter.

Representatives for Stefanik declined to comment.

Stefanik's departure from the House of Representatives would force Gov. Hochul to call a special election within 90 days to fill her vacant seat in the northern part of the state.

The district is ruby red and Stefanik's successor would almost certainly be a Republican who would not upset the party's expected single-digit majority in the House.

The Republican nominee would not be chosen in a primary but by Republican county chairs — which would further allow Stefanik to exert influence over the process.

Should Stefanik actually go to the United Nations, she would probably be represented there more combatively than Trump's last ambassadors Nikki Haley and Kelly Craft.

The congresswoman is a harsh critic of the institution.

After the United Nations floated the idea of expelling Israel over its defensive war in Gaza, Stefanik called for a “complete reassessment of U.S. funding” for the organization.

During her time in Congress, Stefanik made a name for herself as a champion against anti-Semitism at universities.
